The New York Standards Quartet (NYSQ) was formed in 2006 by four master musicians. The concept was a straightforward one: play jazz standards in a unique way. After performing a lot of original music (all the players in this band compose and lead bands that do that) they thought it would be fun and liberating to play music based on conventional, standard jazz tunes that they had grown up playing. By playing jazz standards like “Confirmation” and “All the Things You Are,” they put the focus on the playing of the tune - what to do with it - not so much the melody itself. These songs are blank slates to write on, with a lot of freedom and room for interpretation. NYSQ expanded the approach to include interesting arrangements and reinventions of these tunes, as well as some original compositions that have a close connection to forms and harmonies derived from more traditional standards.
All of the players are well known, recorded and busy musicians with their own bands and all are educators at the collegiate level in the New York area. Together, they are spectacular.
